Nacre also is known as mother of pearl, is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer; it also makes up the outer coating of pearls.

Mother of pearl is made from the inner lining of different mollusc shells, pearl oysters, freshwater pearl mussels and abalone. The iridescent inner lining of the mollusc, called nacre, provides protection from parasites and bacteria. They create this inner lining in the same way they create pearls. The end result of this foreign object being encased in nacre is a round-shaped pearl, whereas the mother of pearl takes the shape of the shell that it lines.
