Abalone shells are known by their colourful inside shell. The iridescent inner lining of the mollusc, called nacre, provides protection from parasites and bacteria. They create this inner lining in the same way they create pearls. The end result of this foreign object being encased in nacre is a round-shaped pearl, whereas the mother of pearl takes the shape of the shell that it lines. Abalones live all over the world. Abalone has unique features: the shell is round, with two to three spirals. The last spiral is grown into a large “ear”-like shape, which explains the name ‘ear-shell’. The shell of the abalone is known for being very strong.
