Nacre also is known as s mother of pearl, is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer; it also makes up the outer coating of pearls.
Mother of pearl is made from the inner lining of different mollusk shells, pearl oysters, freshwater pearl mussels and abalone. The iridescent inner lining of the mollusk, called nacre, provides protection from parasites and bacteria. They create this inner lining in the same way they create pearls. Unsurprisingly, pearls and mother of pearl are made of the same substance: nacre, an iridescent material composed of calcium carbonate. … The end result of this foreign object being encased in nacre is a round-shaped pearl, whereas the mother of pearl takes the shape of the shell that it lines.
Carving is the act of using tools to shape ear stretcher from horn by scraping away portions of that material. Our technique can be applied to any material that is solid enough (we normally use bone, horn or wood) to hold a form even when pieces have been removed from it, and yet soft enough for portions to be scraped away with available tools. Carving tends to require much more work than methods using malleable materials.
